The Londrangar Cliffs in Iceland is not just a geological wonder, but one of the spots steeped in local legend and absolute heaven to avid birdwatchers. For those planning a trip to the island, visiting Londrangar is an absolute must.

In this article, we reveal why this interesting place needs to be on your Iceland bucket list and give you all the information you need to make a stop at this mysterious attraction possible. So, without further ado, here’s everything you need to know about Londrangar.

    Londrangar’s Claim to Fame

Londrangar is basalt cliffs lining the coastline, with two exceptionally steep “peaks” resembling towers. This is also why Londrangar is often called the ‘rocky castle’. Not only do the 75-meter and 61-meter tall towers leave quite the impression and make one feel like you’ve just stepped into a scene from Lord of the Rings, but the Londrangar viewpoint also offers spectacular views across the ocean and the Icelandic landscape.

    Where is Londrangar in Iceland?

Londrangar is located in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, known for its incredible beauty in the west of Iceland. It’s also not too far away from the capital city of Reykjavík (just 192 kilometers), and many opt to make it a stop along their road trip since it’s conveniently located along the popular Ring Road route.

    Via a Tour

You will find plenty of tour operators who offer Landrongar as a destination on some of their existing tour packages. Then you’ll also find private guides who will happily assist with a customized private tour.

    Via a Self-drive

According to us, this is the best way to explore Londrangar. Reaching Londrangar from Reykjavík is easy and will take about 2 hours. If you get on the Ring Road, you should head in the direction of Mosfellsbær.

Then, go through the Hvalfjördur Tunnel in the direction of Borgarnes. At Borgarnes, you need to turn off on Road 54 and keep driving for roughly an hour before turning left in the direction of Arnarstapi. After that it will be just a 10-minute drive before reaching Londrangar.

    The Legends Surrounding Londrangar

It is not just Icelander’s extreme respect for their environment that makes them take extra special care of Londrangar and its surroundings. Here in Iceland, we take our belief in local elves and other mythological creatures very seriously.

The ‘rocky castle’ is said to be home to many of them. And if you know anything about our elves and other mystical beings, they don’t take too kindly to those disrupting their lives or trespassing on and disrespecting their land. So, if you don’t want to face the wrath of our “little locals”, always treat the area with care during your visit.
